MIDICHLORIA MITOCHONDRII

Class: Alpha Proteobacteria
Genus: Midichloria
Species: Midichloria mitochondrii
Description: Midichloria species are symbionts of the hard tick Ixodes ricinus. They live in the cells of the ovary of the females of this tick species. These bacteria have been observed in the mitochondria of the host cells, a trait that has never been described in any other symbiont of animals. Midichloria bacteria seem to consume the mitochondria they parasitize
Synonyms:
Source: An intracellular bacterium from Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in Italy was characterized by electron microscopy (EM)
Pathogenicity: An intracellular bacterium with the unique ability to enter mitochondria exists in the European vector of Lyme disease, the hard tick Ixodes ricinus. Previous phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that the bacterium formed a divergent lineage within the Rickettsiales (Alphaproteobacteria).
