ALCALIGENES DEFRAGRANS

Class: Beta Proteobacteria
Genus: Alcaligenes
Species: Alcaligenes defragrans
Description: Alcaligenes defragrans is a Gram-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, strictly aerobic, motile bacterium from the genus Alcaligenes.Four pseudomonad strains 51Men, 54Pin, 62Car and 65Phen were recently isolated on the monoterpenes (+)-menthene, α-pinene, 2-carene and α-phellandrene as sole carbon source and nitrate as electron acceptor. These bacteria were characterised. The motile, mesophilic, Gram-negative rods had a strictly respiratory metabolism. Monoterpenes as carbon sources were completely mineralised to carbon dioxide.
