BURKHOLDERIA DOLOSA

Class: Beta Proteobacteria
Genus: Burkholderia
Species: Burkholderia dolosa
Description: Burkholderia dolosa,Gram-negative, small (1.5–2.5µm long), motile, rod-shaped cells.Burkholderia dolosa, formerly Burkholderia cepacia genomovar VI, belongs to the Burkholderia cepacia complex, a group of opportunistic pathogens that preferentially attacks the lungs of those with cystic fibrosis(CF). The infection in CF patients by Burkholderia spp. significantly increases mortality rates and is an ongoing problem in disease management. Pathogenicity factors include peritrichous pili that attach to mucin (found in mucous) in the CF lung. These are extremely long pili, 2-4 microns in length, which are intertwined, and contain numerous binding determinants along their length. The organism also produces various cytotoxins, and carries genes for resistance to antibiotics making treatment a difficult prospect.
