ACIDITHIOBACILLUS FERRIPHILUS
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Acidithiobacillus |
| Species: | Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus |
| Description: | Gram-stain-negative, motile, straight rods (1–2μm long)that do not form endospores. Forms small, ferric-iron-stained colonies on acidic ferrous iron overlay media. Obligate chemolithoautotroph, capable of growth using ferrous iron or reduced sulfur (elemental sulfur or tetrathionate) as electron donors. Facultative anaerobe, capable of coupling the oxidation of ferrous iron and reduced sulfur to the reduction of molecular oxygen, and the oxidation of reduced sulfur to the reduction of ferric iron. Mesophilic and extremely acidophilic. |
