ALIIVIBRIO SALMONICIDA

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Aliivibrio
Species: Aliivibrio salmonicida
Description: Gram-negative, straight rods, motile by one or more sheathed flagella. No lateral flagella on solid media, not swarming on complex media.
Synonyms:
Source: Isolated from diseased salmonid fish raised in ponds in Norway. Susceptible to vibriostatic compound O/129. Resistant to Carbenicillin (100 μg) and Ampicillin (10 μg)
Pathogenicity: Causes Hitra disease (“hemorrhagic syndrome”) in salmonid fish. Pathogenicity may be lost by passage on artificial substrates but can be regained by passage through fish.Intraperitoneal injection of broth cultures of V. salmonicida into both rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon and challenge through water reproduce symptoms identical to those of natural outbreaks.
