Description: Cells are straight to slightly curved rods. Multiply by binary fission, motile by polar flagella. Cells occur singly or in pairs. Gram-negative. Contain internal photosynthetic membrane systems of vesicular type in which the photosynthetic pigments bacteriochlorophyll CI and carotenoids are located. Photo- lithoautotrophic growth with sulfide or elemental sulfur as electron donor under anoxic conditions in the light.
