CARDIOBACTERIUM VALVARUM

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Cardiobacterium
Species: Cardiobacterium valvarum
Description: Is a fastidious gram-negative bacillus. Its preferred culture medium is sheep blood agar, and visible colonies appear after an incubation period of 3 days. The colonies, observed under a dissecting microscope, are round, elevated, opaque, smooth, and glistening. However, the colonies hardly reach 1 mm after extended incubation. Thus, C. valvarum is more fastidious than C. hominis, whose colonies appear after a 2-day incubation and reach a diameter of 2.2 mm after 4 days.
