HALOTHIOBACILLUS HYDROTHERMALIS

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria

Species: Halothiobacillus hydrothermalis
Description: Obligately chemolithoautotrophic Gram-negative rods, 0.3-0.6 x 1.0-1.5μm, obtaining energy from reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. Tolerant of high concentrations of solutes (e.g. 4 M NaCl ; 0.25 M sodium thiosulfate), with some strains showing moderate halophily with a requirement for NaCl.
