HISTOPHILUS SOMNI
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Histophilus |
| Species: | Histophilus somni |
| Description: | Gram-negative,non-motile rods or coccobacilli. Endospores are not formed.Growth is mesophilic and capnophilic and is not dependenton V-factor or X-factor. |
| Synonyms: | |
| Source: | The type strain was isolated in the USA from a bovine brain with TME lesions. It is als found as a commensal in the prepuces and semen and in the female genital tract and may also be part of the resident microbial flora of the upper respiratory tract. |
| Pathogenicity: | This organism is a major cause of disease in feedlot cattle. It causes constriction of blood vessels supplying major organs, restricting blood supply which leads to reduced oxygen delivery, and leads to tissue damage and death. The diseases that result are pneumonia, arthritis, myocarditis (inflammation of heart muscle), and reproductive problems resulting in the loss of millions of dollars in animals each year. This bacterium can live intracellularly, and avoids or inhibits the oxidative burst of phagocytes. Some of the major virulence determinants are the lipooligosaccharides and various surface antigens, a few of which appear to bind the Fc (conserved region) determinant on immunoglobulins |
