PSEUDOMONAS STUTZERI

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Pseudomonas
Species: Pseudomonas stutzeri
Description: Pseudomonas stutzeri is a nonfluorescent denitrifying bacterium widely distributed in the environment. The Pseudomonas stutzeri species possesses a high degree of phenotypic and genotypicheterogeneity.
Synonyms:
Source: widely distributed in the environment, and it has also been isolated as an opportunistic pathogen from humans.
Pathogenicity: A few cases of P. stutzeri infection have been reported in association with bacteremia/septicemia,bone infection, i.e., fracture infection, joint infection, osteomyelitis, and arthritis, endocarditis; eye infection, i.e., endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis; meningitis; pneumonia and/or empyema, skin infection, i.e., ecthyma gangrenosum; urinary tract infection; and ventriculitis. Only two of the above cases resulted in death. This reflects P. stutzeri's relatively low degree of virulence.
