SALMONELLA ENTERICA SUBSP.ENTERICA SEROVAR TYPHI
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Salmonella |
| Species: | Salmonella enterica subsp.enterica serovar typhi |
| Description: | Salmonella typhi is a gram negative,rod-shaped bacterium that causes systemic infections and typhoid fever in humans. It is Wild strains may possess H antigen z66 instead of H antigen d (Guinee et al., 1981). There are over 2,000 various serovars that comprise Salmonella enterica, each very closely related to each other making Salmonella typhi a prime example of a serovar. Salmonella typhi is a gram negative bacterium that causes systemic infections and typhoid fever in humans. It has caused many deaths in developing countries where sanitation is poor and is spread through contamination of water and undercooked food. Eradication seems highly unlikely due to recent emergence of multi drug resistance strains. Salmonella Typhi strain Ct18 was originally isolated from a patient in a hospital in Vietnam. |
| Synonyms: | Salmonella typhi(genbank synonym); Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi; Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi; Salmonella enterica ser. typhi; Salmonella choleraesuis typhi; Salmonella choleraesuis serovar Typhi; Bacterium (subgen. Eberthella) typhi; Bacillus typhi. |
| Source: | This rod-shaped,flagellated organism’s sole reservoir is humans.Transmitted by water or food contaminated by human excreta. |
| Pathogenicity: | Pathogenic only for humans, that causes systemic infections and typhoid fever in humans. It has caused many deaths in developing countries where sanitation is poor and is spread through contamination of water and undercooked food. It is a deadly bacterial disease that causes typhoid fever and is transmitted through food and water. |
