SALMONELLA ENTERICA SUBSP.HOUTENAE
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Salmonella |
| Species: | Salmonella enterica subsp.houtenae |
| Description: | The name "houtenae" was given to this species because of Houten,a town in Holland. It contains atleast 70 serovars (Popoff et al., 1998). All serovars belonging to this subspecies are monophasic for the H antigen. It is a Gram negative rod-shaped bacterium. The rods are straight and usually motile. This new subspecies was previously Salmonella group 4.Gas is produced when fermenting sugars, and hydrogen sulfide is frequently encountered.Growth occurs optimally at 35- 37C. |
| Synonyms: | Salmonella houtenae; Salmonella enterica subsp.IV; Salmonella enterica IV; Salmonella choleraesuis subsp. houtenae; Salmonella cholerae-suis subsp. Houtenae. |
| Source: | Isolated mainly from cold-blooded animals and Environment.Mainly found in Reptiles. |
| Pathogenicity: | Although Salmonella enterica subsp houtenae currently comprises 71 distinct serovars (POPOFF & LE MINOR, 2001) human infections due to this microorganism are rarely documented. But recently A report about human cases which registered the presence of Salmonella enterica subsp houtenae associated to HIV-infected patient in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Isolation of this species of Salmonella from blood culture of a HIV-infected patient. There is another report, said that "Brain abscess"caused by Salmonella enterica subspecies houtenae in apatient with chronic granulomatous disease. |
