STENOTROPHOMONAS MALTOPHILIA

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Stenotrophomonas
Species: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
Description: S. maltophilia is a Gram-negative obligate aerobe that is rod shaped and motile with a few polar flagella. It is able to persist in nutrient-poor aqueous environments.
Synonyms: Xanthomonas maltophilia (Hugh 1981) Swings et al. 1983, "Pseudomonas maltophilia" Hugh and Ryschenkow 1961.
Source: S. maltophilia is an environmental bacterium found in aqueous habitats, including plant rhizospheres, animals, foods, and water sources. Infections of S. maltophilia can occur in a range of organs and tissues; the organism is commonly found in respiratory tract infections.
Pathogenicity: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging multidrug-resistant global opportunistic pathogen. The increasing incidence of nosocomial and community-acquired S. maltophilia infections is of particular concern for immunocompromised individuals, as this bacterial pathogen is associated with a significant fatality/case ratio. it can cause pneumonia, urinary tract infections, or an infection of the blood. This organism can also cause infection in immunocompromised patients. It has resistance to many commonly used antibiotics and therefore is often difficult to eradicate.
