Description: Cells are spherical, 1-0-3.0 μm in diameter, diplococci before multiplication by binary fission and are non-motile. Tetrads may be formed after consecutive division in two perpendicular planes. Individual cells are surrounded by a strong slime capsule. May contain gas vesicles. Gram-negative. Internal photosynthetic membrane system of vesicular type containing the photosynthetic pigments bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids.
