WIGGLESWORTHIA GLOSSINIDIA
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Wigglesworthia |
| Species: | Wigglesworthia glossinidia |
| Description: | Cultivated outside their hosts, although it is possible to keep them metabolically active for at least 72 h under transient tissue culture conditions. The type strain is the primary endosymbiont of C. morsitans morsitans. They are short rods (length, 1 to 2 μm) and are inside cells surrounded by host membranes. The microorganisms are in cytoplasm of the specialized epithelial cells called mycetocytes. They have a typical gram-negative cell wall and lack flagella. The cells appear to divide by binary fission. |
