XANTHOMONAS ALBILINEANS
| Class: | Gamma Proteobacteria |
| Genus: | Xanthomonas |
| Species: | Xanthomonas albilineans |
| Description: | It exhibits distinctive pathogenic mechanisms, ecology and taxonomy. The antibacterial activity of albicidin also confers on X. albilineans a competitive advantage against rival bacteria during sugarcane colonization. |
| Synonyms: | Bacterium albilineans Ashby 1929, "Phytomonas albilineans" (Ashby 1929) Magrou 1937, "Agrobacterium albilineans" (Ashby 1929) Savulescu 1947, "Pseudomonas albilineans" (Ashby 1929) Krasil'nikov 1949, "Xanthomonas albilineans var. paspali" Orian 1962. |
| Source: | Transmitted in cuttings, mechanically, and by wind-blown rain. |
| Pathogenicity: | Causes leaf scald, a lethal disease of sugarcane.Xanthomonas albilineans produces a potent toxin, albicidin, which is responsible for the characteristic whitening of sugar cane leaves and stunted plant growth. Infection with Xanthomonas albilineans can lead to rapid wilting and death. Plants infected with Xanthomonas albilineans can be asymptomatic with active disease occurring after a period of stress, such as a drought. |
