XANTHOMONAS CAMPESTRIS

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Xanthomonas
Species: Xanthomonas campestris
Description: It is used in the commercial production of a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide – xanthan gum – that is an efficient viscosifier of water and that has many important uses, especially in the food industry.
Synonyms: "Bacillus campestris" Pammel 1895, "Pseudomonas campestris" (Pammel 1895) Smith 1897, "Bacterium campestre" (Pammel 1895) Smith 1897, "Phytomonas campestris" (Pammel 1895) Bergey et al. 1923 (heterotypic synonym: "Xanthomonas campestris var. aberrans" Knösel 1961), "Xanthomonas campestris var. armoraceae" (McCulloch) Starr and Burkholder 1942.

Pathogenicity: Causes bacterial leaf spot (BLS) on peppers and tomatoes. It causes symptoms throughout the above-ground portion of the plant including leaf spots, fruit spots and stem cankers.. This species is a major cause of black rot in crucifers, a disease that results in massive tissue degeneration.
