XANTHOMONAS CITRI

Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Genus: Xanthomonas
Species: Xanthomonas citri
Description: Citrus canker, Asian canker and Oriental canker were names for the disease associated with the pathogenic species Xanthomonas citri, then with Xanthomonas campestris pv. citri.
Synonyms:
Source: The bacterium survives in leaf, shoot and fruit lesions that develop during the spring, and which also cause secondary infections. During warm, wet weather in spring and early summer, the bacterium oozes out of overwintering lesions and infects new growth via the stomal pores or wounds. The bacterium may also survive for various periods of time in the soil or associated with other hosts.
Pathogenicity: X. citri is a bacterial pathogen that causes citrus canker - a disease which results in heavy economic losses to the citrus industry worldwide either in terms of damage to trees (particularly reduced fruit production), reduced access to export markets, or the costs of its prevention and control. This organism is the causal agent of citrus canker, a bacterial infection originating from southeast Asia which now occurs worldwide. Primarily a pathogen of plants in the Citrus genus, the disease is sometimes also found in other members of the Rutaceae. The primary innoculum for spring infections are lesions on shoots and leaves resulting from infections from the previous autummn, and in which the pathogen overwinters.
