Description Erwinia stewartii known as "Pantoea stewartii subsp. Stewartii".It is a yellow,non-motile, non-sporing, Gram-negative rod,occurring singly and in short chains(Bradbury,1967).Colonies on nutrient-glucose agar are cream-yellow,lemon-yellow or orange-yellow and flat, raised or convex,respectively.
Synonyms Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Smith 1898) Mergaert et al. 1993; Xanthomonas stewarti; Pseudomonas stewarti; Pseudobacterium stewarti; Phytomonas stewarti; Bacterium stewarti; Aplanobacter stawarti.
Habitat/Source It may be transmitted in seed, and occasionally overwinters in soil, manure or maize stalk. "Pantoea stewartii subsp. Stewartii"is indigenous to America and has been introduced to other parts of the world with maize seed.
Pathogenicity Stewart's Wilt is a serious bacterial disease of corn caused by the bacterium. This bacterium affects plants, particularly types of maize or corn such as sweet,flint,dent,flower and popcorn. The disease is also known as bacterial wilt or bacterial leaf blight.The primary vector of Pantoea stewartii is the corn flea beetle(Chaetocnema pulicaria). The bacterium overwinters in the gut of the adult beetle during the winter and come spring,is spread when adult beetles feed on the plant seedling.Plants may be destroyed at the seedling stage or,if infected later,may reach a reasonable size.The bacterium also attacks other Poaceae cultivated for fodder in North America:Tripsacum dactyloides, Zea mexicana.
