Description The name Providencia rustigianii sp. nov. Is previously known as Providencia alcalifaciens biogroup 3. Straight rods that are Gram negative, this bacterium does not frequently produce gas from glucose. Produces urease. Growth is best at 35-37 C. It is rare in clinical specimens, being infrequently found in stool specimens.

Habitat/Source Natural sources would most likely be surface waters. Providencia rustigianii was isolated from human feces and is a member of normal human gut microbial community.
Pathogenicity They may colonize the human intestinal tract but the medical significance of this is not known.
