Description It was named after L.F. Rettger, the American bacteriologist who first isolated the organism in 1904. It is a Gram-negative bacterial species belongs to family enterobacteriaceae.It is an opportunistic pathogen which causes urinary tract infections and other infections such as eye infection and diahrrhea.

Habitat/Source Mainly in water and soil habitat.Generally isolated from urine specimens of hospi- talized and catheterized patients and less frequently from other sites
Pathogenicity Bacteremia and urinary tract infections,eye infection. May cause nosocomial infections
