Description It is a Gram-negative bacterial species belongs to family enterobacteriaceae.It is an opportunistic pathogen which causes urinary tract infections .
Synonyms Proteus stuartii ; Proteus inconstans.
Habitat/Source Soil,water,sewage.Isolated most often from urine specimens of hospitalized and catheterized patients. Less frequently isolated from wounds, burns, and bacteremias.
Pathogenicity Bacteremia and urinary tract infections.They occur in small numbers in the intestines of some individuals and are rarely isolated routinely from stool cultures in the clinical laboratory but serve as the source for the colonization of the skin of the groin area,which may lead to autoinfections and cross-infections.
