Description It is a Gram negative rod-shaped bacteria. Salmonella bongori is a pathogenic bacterium belonging to the genus Salmonella. All serovars belonging to S. bongori are monophasic for the H antigen.
Synonyms Salmonella enterica subsp. bongori; Salmonella enterica subsp. V; Salmonella enterica V; Salmonella choleraesuis subsp. bongori; Salmonella cholerae-suis subsp. Bongori.
Habitat/Source It was discovered in 1966 from a lizard in the city of Bongor, Chad, from which the specific name bongori was derived.It is typically considered a microbe of cold-blooded animals,unlike other members of the genus,and is most frequently associated with reptiles.Isolated mainly from cold-blooded animals and environment.
Pathogenicity Salmonella bongori is the second species of Salmonella after Salmonella enterica and is considered a distant outgroup.This species is reptile-specific, is rarely found in human infections and it lacks SPI-2.It causes a gastrointestinal disease called salmonellosis, characterized by cramping and diarrhoea.
