Description This is a Yersinia enterocolitica-like species that was named after the Danish microbiologist Wilhelm Frederiksen,who made a substantial contribution to the study of the genus Yersinia. Yersinia frederiksenii is a Gram-negative species of bacteria. It uses rhamnose and sucrose.

Habitat/Source This organism is isolated from freshwater,sewage, fish,soil,wild and domesticated animals, food,and healthy human and infrequently from human clinical specimens (wound and respiratory tract). Other sources include livestock, wild rodents, food, and soil.
Pathogenicity The pathogenicity of Yersinia frederiksenii in man and animals is not clearly established. They tend to behave more like opportunistic pathogens than true pathogens.
